A piece of humble pie

If you’re anything like me, then you’ve probably spent a lot of days scratching your head trying to come up with half decent business ideas just so you can quit the job you hate. But what happens once you’re on to a winner? How many of you are willing to ‘take a leap of faith’ and risk the things you’ve worked so hard for up until now? I’m sure there’s an expectedly high number of you. Well, I too am part of the majority. You see, for most of 2009, I would spend hours thinking of ways to make more money, or to strike it rich, or sometimes to make enough just to get by without the worries of my day job.

At some point last year in the midst of all the Get Rich Quick books I purchased two vintage 10 speed racers in the hope of restoring them and being the coolest kid in town. Well long story short I never got around to fixing them up – I just rode one until the front tire burst and the other until it had been taken hostage by the cob webs at the front of my house (I suffer from a terrible phobia of spiders and wish to never go near the bike again). But before my lust for riding vintage bikes went sour and just after I had both bikes in my possession and in fine working order, a new business idea had hit me right in the face: A bike hire company that only hired out unique, very sexy vintage bikes at an even sexier fee.

Admittedly there is still room for this sort of business in Sydney, but as I was going through my Monster Children magazine (which had been patiently awaiting my return from holidays) today, I came across an article that reminded me of the very same business idea I speak of. Meet Matthew Hurst – in April of 2009, Matthew was jobless and kicking it in Buenos Aires, riding vintage bikes on the cheap all around town. Upon his return home, he noticed that there was a lack in good bike hire places in and around Melbourne. So he decided to start one.

The Humble Vintage is a vintage bike hire place suitable for those who appreciate a good ride at a very affordable price. The ‘fleet’ of bikes are currently stored at Matthew’s home in Fitzroy (which he delivers personally at a location convenient to you), Idaho Vintage Clothing in St Kilda and Fat also in Fitzroy. Starting from $30 a day or $80 a week, bike hire has never been so affordable. On the several occasions that I’ve looked for bike hire services, I’ve found the prices to be quite easily twice that, just for a few hours hire, of The Humble Vintage‘s whole day hire price. Yikes!

So if you’re from Melbourne, or ever find yourself in Melbourne, be sure to call Matt for a good time. I heard he never disappoints.
